NOTEBOOK: FIVE BEST BETS FOR HARBORFEST
by Tim Nekritz
“…GrooveLily (Niagara Mohawk River Stage, Sunday, 3 p.m.): Quick, what do GrooveLily, Great Big Sea and the Dave Matthews Band all have in common?
All three fuse different variations of music with pop and all three throw a violin in the mix. The latter two also happen to be a couple of the best bands to see live.
Where does this leave GrooveLily, which consists of pianist Brendan Milburn, drummer Gene Lewin and violinist/vocalist Valerie Vigoda?
Well, one theory is that you can’t go wrong seeing an act with an attractive violinist. Whether it’s the Celtic fiddling of Natalie MacMaster, the smooth bluegrass of Allison Krauss & Union Station or the ripping alt-rock of The Dambuilders, the result tends to be a show well worth seeing.”

“…Sunday’s early rain failed to dampen the spirits of GrooveLily or its audience at the river stage. As the drizzle slowed, the crowd picked up to catch the trio of Valerie Vigoda on electric violin and vocals, Brendan Milburn on keyboard and vocals, and Gene Lewin on drums.
“We came straight here from a studio in Rhode Island” where they are working on their next album, Vigoda told listeners. She added they were going “straight back after the show … we can’t hang around to see Hank Williams III and all the other great music today.” Vigoda later joined the crowd, stepping off the river stage barge and playing her electric, flying-V six-string fiddle among the music fans gathered in River Walk West.”

“Heavy rain on Sunday afternoon did not stop fans from catching the musical act GrooveLily at Harborfest’s River Stage. An enthusiastic crowd sat through the rain to enjoy a terrific performance from the New York City band.”

“…I dried off in the office for a while, then braved the weather to see groovelily. The rain decreased, the band continued, the crowd increased. The pop-rock-folk trio gave an impressive performance…”
