A couple of years ago, our manager Ben asked us if we might want to submit a spec song for inclusion on the soundtrack (and perhaps in the film) of an upcoming Tim Allen movie called “Crazy on the Outside.“
Through his connections, he got us a copy of the script, and we wrote the first verse and chorus of this song. I seem to recall that it was supposed to be a rocker–sort of a Huey Lewis & The News early-80′s style thing, which is TOTALLY FUN to do, and a little bit out of the ordinary for us. Here’s the plot, from the wikipedia page:
Crazy on the Outside centers on a fresh out of jail parolee (Tim Allen) who finds out that life outside his prison cell is much more complicated than he was expecting, especially when he starts spending time with his eccentric sister (Sigourney Weaver) and all the crazy people in and around her life.
That’s a nice synopsis, but it leaves out a crucial detail: Tim Allen’s character is falling in love with his parole officer. He breaks into her apartment with two other ex-cons in order to repaint all of her walls, as a gesture of his love for her. Now if that isn’t romantic–in the “thank you for killing my pimp” school of romance–I don’t know what is.
We hit upon this as a key element for our song–and we ran with it.Ben sent the partially completed song on to them, and we never heard back. Then they went ahead and made the movie. It appears to have had a rather abbreviated run in theaters this past January–we never got to see it–and it currently has a 0% rating at Rottentomatoes.com. Wow.
When our Warner-Chappell due date came up, we dusted this one off and finished it as best we could, and we’re happy with how it turned out. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Loving the new music. What are the odds one or more make it into the set list in Philly?

Heh–well, we’ll have to rehearse new stuff on two coasts at once. Not entirely out of the question, but let’s see how many people want the new stuff. Hey people! How many of you want to hear the new stuff?
Love the song – it sounds like it could be a great sit-com theme song!
So glad you dig it!
From your lips to somebody’s ears…please call all sitcom producers you know and tell them we should write their next theme song, would you? Thank you!
Of course, you realize that most TV shows these days have almost no theme songs? Castle and Eureka are both about 7 seconds in length, for example. Yes, some shows still have them, but they’re almost an afterthought, and studios would rather not give people time to see what else might be on during the opening credits….
Someday, some show is going to win an Emmy and they won’t have any show-specific music for them to play during the walk to the podium. Seriously.
That having been said… surely someone at the Mouse would want a theme song for the newest Disney Channel blockbuster? There’s your in. Either that, or we start getting you folks on the Tinkerbell soundtracks instead of the Celtic Woman people… I’m just saying…
And nobody would turn away from a Groovelily song anyway!!!
Meanwhile, I agree completely with Linda and Adam. Great song, and I would like to hear it live as well, if possible.
Love the new stuff, definitely want to hear it!!!
