I respectfully request GrooveLily's great cover of the Stevie Wonder tune Tell Me Something Good.

Hope to see a bunch of NJ/NY area Petal Pushers at the show. :-)

I was listening to Little Light a few days ago and it struck me that one of the few recorded songs I've never heard you do live is I Wanna Know What Love Is. Any chance you could work that up for Summit?

Of course, I'm also hoping the beautiful new solo version of Patiently is now in regular rotation and will show up as well.

I wouldn't care if y'all sang the Oscar Mayer ditty just as long as you do it in S.C.

Rob, I've never heard of Stevie doing TMSG; are you sure it's not the one by Rufus?? Just curious.

Correct, Rufus recorded it, Stevie Wonder wrote it.

Quoted from David Kowalski: I was listening to Little Light a few days ago and it struck me that one of the few recorded songs I've never heard you do live is I Wanna Know What Love Is. Any chance you could work that up for Summit?

"I Wanna Know What Love Is" has been a longtime favorite song of mine and the GrooveLily cover is a hoot! I love Val's straight singing with the reggae response in the background. (Gene? or Brendan?) At the first hearing of this song, I thought, "What in the world?" But it has grown on me tremendously and has become a favorite.

Did I see where the new rendition of "Patiently" is going to be on one of the Back Issues Series CD's? I want to upload that version to Radio Paradise, when uploading songs there is once again possible.

Well, unless something's changed since the merch page was last updated, the bonus Patiently on the re-issue is a 1991 demo so, unless Val travelled back in time with her Viper to record that demo (maybe there's a deeper story than we know behind Rewind?), I'm thinking it's not the new, violin-only version!

Of course--the newest version of "Patiently" will probably be on the next CD? Is a new CD in the works? I wouldn't want to be accused of starting rumors here, now would I? I suspect that first on the agenda is wrapping up RIPfest, the Summit, NJ gig, putting the MinimaLily tour together, etc. etc. etc.

But I'm sure a new CD is always in the works as soon as the previous CD is sent to the printers. so it's just a matter of WHEN, right?

I just noticed there's no address information posted for this concert other than Summit Middle School. Does anyone know the school's address?

Hey Folks,

I forgot to pick up the set list, so I'll just share some highlights, including those things that stood out about this performance.

The venue was a beautiful Middle School auditorium in Summit, NJ. Really high ceilings, beautiful lighting fixtures, and a balcony area. For a benefit concert, the crowd was smaller than most had hoped, but it was a very enthusiastic group. As the band entered the stage, someome yelled to Brendan to take his shoes off (clearly someone who had seen grooveLily before).

The opening song is one of my favorites, The Balancing Act. Valerie's solo performance of Patiently as once again stunningly beautiful. This solo arrangement of the Patiently really showcases the Viper and Valerie's mastery of the instrument. This piece leaves your spine tingling.

The musical rarity of the evening however was Love Song Without Metaphor. This piece originally appeared on Brendan and the Extenuating Circumstances, featuring Brendan on vocals (which is how it is performed live most of the time). Love Song Without Metaphor reappeared on the 2000 release, Little Light, featuring Valerie on lead vocals, which is what we were treated to on Friday night, but there is more.

In addition to Valerie doing lead vocal duties, she also played her violin without using her bow! While many of you have probably seen Valerie pluck the violin strings on some songs, while Friday night's performance of Love Song Without Metaphor featured Valerie playing her violin as an electric mandolin, that's right using a guitar pick rather than a violin bow. WOW, what a special treat! I hope to hear more Viper-electric mandolin parts in the future.

As some of you may know, Valerie played a little mandolin when touring with Cyndi Lauper in 1997. In fact there is a great story in the Road Tales section you might want to read (see WPLJ story).

I've sent some pictures to Gene, including some "bowless" Valerie" shots, so you will have an opportunity to see for yourself.

The set including a 14-minue Striking 12 minute, which that band has be playing in all the shows I've seen since January. Shannon as a last minute addition to the set, added after the opening performer (Suzanne Buirgy) played a song about her mother, who was an Irish immigrant to the USA. Suzanne alos joined the band during the encore of Tell Me Something Good (thanks for playing me requested!).

The house sound was generally good, with Stirling Audio running the house sound board. This was the very first show I've been too were if any thing, the Viper was too hot in the mix (at least for the start of the performance). I'm not sure if this was just because I'm so use to the Viper being to low in the mix, or if indeed it was a little hot.

Little Nemesis was a last minute addition to the setlist, being requested of Brendan by a young fan (not one of mine) in the corridors of the school building just prior to the performance.

Great to meet one our newest Petal Pusher "Jess" and her two GrooveLily newbie friends at the show. I hope that have become believers as well. Also present were Adam, David, Lonna, Peter, and Bev. thanks to Adam to his great work at the Merchandise Table, and for Adam and Theresa's excellent pre-show promotional work.

I am sure I'm forgetting something, but I've got to run to a birthday party.

----Rob

p.s. Hope to see some of you at Bodles next week.

Also in attendance was the altogether-too-rare face of Genevieve!

Been a busy weekend for me but, briefly, here's the setlist:

  • The Balancing Act
  • Shannon
  • It's All Right
  • Little Nemesis
  • Diva Girl
  • Love Song Without Metaphor (I Want You Back)
  • Rewind
  • Patiently
  • No Room In Your Bag
  • Striking 12 (excerpt)
  • Apcoalyptic Love Song
  • Tell Me Something Good (encore)

Not much else to add to what Rob said. I'll be at RIPFest tomorrow night and will try to post a quick note about it on Tuesday.

Yes, so sorry I forgot to mention Genevieve (who sat next to us! ). It was wonderful seeing you. :-) Our 7 year old loved playing "concentration" with you, and has been showing her older sister the advance version that you taught her.
