Hi Folks, Let me know if any of you "tristate" area (NY-NJ-CT) PPs are planning to attend the show and are interested in working the Merchandise Table. Terry and I will be there with a bunch of friends. We'd be happy to offer the Merchandise Table to any other interested parties so we can have a little more time to hangout with our guests. I also hope to do some recording, as well. Thanks! --Rob |

Dear V/B/G, It's request time. Given that you will be coming off a week of Striking 12 performances, how about a tune from that great musical? I'd love to hear either Say What or This is Not the End. Should these songs not work well outside the context of the musical itself, then please consider, Tell Me What's On Your Mind (with lot's of Brendan supporting vocals - like on Jungle and Sky ). Thanks! ---Rob

Directions to Bodles Opera House For those of you in the tristate area making the trip on Saturday to Bodles ("boo-dles") Opera House, here are some directions. I'm assuming you can find their way to Chester, NY (off of NY RT 17). While Bodles is on "Main St.", it is on neither of the two main highways in Chester (Rt 17M or Rt. 94). Actually, Bodles is located in the "Historic Downtown" part of Chester, and hence is a little off the main roads. Here are some detailed directions.
- Once in Chester get on Rt 94 North (this assumes you enter Chester from Rt 17 (future I-86), or Rt. 17M)
- Make a left at the first "T" intersection with a STOP sign (still on Rt. 94 North, but now also Main St) .
- Go about 2 blocks and bear right at fork (Chester Fire Station will be on your right - brick building). At this point you have exited Rt. 94, but are still on Main St. (you should also see signs for "Historic Downtown").
- Go about 2 block and you'll see Bodle's (big green and gold sign) on right (immediately after the Police Station - how comforting
). - There is parking behind Bodles, so turn right, down the street immediate after the Police station, but just before Bodles (Bodles and the police station are separated by a narrow street that heads to the rear parking areas).
While the place is called Bodles "Opera House", don't dress like you are going to the opera! It is a historic building, with causal dining. ---Rob

Well, after driving two hours (thank you, rush-hour-traffic) to Bryn Mawr on Friday and then two-and-a-half to Bodles on Saturday, I'm a bit tired for a blow-by-blow of the Bodles gig but I thought I'd at least get the setlist and a few thoughts up. A number of you know that I don't often like the acts that open for Groovelily but Bodles was a pleasant exception. Unfortunately, my brain is burping away and I'm drawing a near-blank on the name of this Simon-and-Garfunkle like duo (AJ something-or-other and his sometimes-performing partner Jonathan (?)...(sorry guys, I really enjoyed your set, though)...somebody less-senile-than-I please help out here!). Lovely harmonies filled their set along with a fair amount of clowning around (there was a particularly funny running gag about Jonathan's picture not being on AJ's promotional cards and, at one point, AJ duly took out a camera and the two of them began taking pictures of each other both on stage and running out to sit with various audience members!). OK, let's see if we can describe the rest of the evening a bit more coherently: Here was the set-list:
- Day of Reckoning
- Happy, Happy, Happy
- Little Nemesis
- Jimi Hendrix eat your heart out! - Diva Girl
- Live Through This
- Can You Believe
- Inhabit My Heart
- stunningly beautiful and moving There followed a brief description of the workshops the band just did out in California regarding the reworking of Striking 12 and we were treated to the brand-new song which now opens the story (the story now begins with Grumpy Man stuck working late on New Year's eve):
- Last Day of the Year
- Say What
- Looking Forward, Looking Back
- Coming Home
- Wait
- Blessings
- No Room in Your Bag
- Apocalyptic Love Song
The closing number was another "blow-the-roof-off-the-place" performances and the audience leapt to their feet screaming their approval as the final violin lick descended into the depths of the Viper's lower strings. Even if there had been time-constraints here (as there were with the 7pm show at The Point last night), I think the venue would have had a near-riot on their hands if the band did not come back to play an encore so they obliged with Sitting on the Fence I have to say that this was some of the most stunning playing I've heard from the band in quite some time (and that's in the context of quite a bit of stunning playing of late!). It's unfortunate that throughout much of the evening, the band was forced to compete with a particularly loud and inebriated party-of-four seated directly in front of the small stage. I'm assured from some of the folks who sat further towards the back of the room that the annoyance was less obvious there but towards the front, the closing of Apocalyptic Love Song was perhaps the only number loud enough to drown these people out. Interestingly, this group was one of the first on their feet cheering at the end of the show so, as we say in the business, "go figger..." This was, however, a single distraction in an otherwise stunning evening. For those of you have never been to Bodles, it is well worth the drive. The ride up takes you through some really beautiful countryside, Bodles itself is run by a charming and very friendly bunch of people, the atmosphere is fun, the sound system (and the sound crew) were among the best I've ever heard at smaller GL venues and, save the isolated disruptions in the crowd, this struck me as a damn-near perfect place to enjoy the band. A large number of the New Jersey crowd made the long trek...Birthday-girl Meg Numata and my-main-squeeze Lonna Buinis were at an all-girls' table (replete with several GL first-timers), my table was graced by the delightful Jodi Goldman (thanks for driving, Jodi!) and the suave and urbane Adam Wolf (oops...I think I'm starting to sound like Charles now!), the home-coming Bonds were there with several friends (Rob grew up not far from here, I understand) and several members of Gene's family made the trek up from the Princeton area. There was also new-fan Peter from Lake Hopatcong(sorry, Peter, I never caught your last name) who is enough of a convert to have travelled both down to Bryn Mawr on Friday and up here on Saturday. I'm probably leaving many people out (when Val asked the audience "how many of you are from somewhere nowhere near here?" it sounded like at least half the room applauded). OK...so much for my quick posting...gotta run now...really... --David

David, Thanks for doing the "heavy lifting" for the show review, and for posting the set list. The opening act was A.J. Swearingen with Jonathan Beedle. I agree, they were VERY good. Yes it was a great show, and a wonderful evening. I thought the house sound was excellent, although I felt the Viper was under mixed in the house sound for Apocalyptic Love Song and Little Nemesis, which lessen the impact of Valerie's great playing (something that I've found in practically every performance I've heard (both live and recorded live) since the Prince Music Theater shows in December - perhaps I got spoiled by the Prince). Inhabit My Heart was the musical highlight for me. Valerie provided a wonderful introduction to the song, being a tribute to her aunt who had past away at a far too young age. The song really sounded great. In second place was one of my personal favorites, Can You Believe. Also, thanks to V/B/G for playing my requested song, Say What. Let me echo David's comments on Bodles, it is a great place to see a show, with really friendly people running the place. I was told the house numbered about 90, which was a very good size crowd according to the management. I believe the show in November was around 60 in size, so that's a good increase. Judging from the applause, I'd guess about 1/3 to 1/2 of the house was first timers. In talking to the management, I sensed their intent to have the band back in the Fall. Kudos to the band for a great performance, and for putting up with the table of "bad listeners" with the big bar bill sitting directly in front of Brendan (and directly below my ceiling-suspended microphones !!! ) Before I began my recording of the show, I went over to introduced myself to a gentleman (Peter) at a table near where I would be standing for much of the recording. As it turned out he knew me from this Discussion Board, and in fact was also from NJ. When I asked where he stated Hopatcong (David, that's "Hopatcong", not "Lake Hopatcong" - a technicality ), which is in fact where I live. How strange is that? When I asked him where in Hopatcong does he live, it turns out the next block over from my house! Peter first heard GrooveLily on WNTI (the local non-commercial, free form station) last August, and apparently has been a fixture at their 2003 shows in the NY/NJ/PA area. Way to go Peter! [Hey Peter, drop me a line, as I want to conspire with you on something.] Thanks to Jodi and Adam for running Merch table operations, and for David for pitching in as needed. Great seeing you guys, as well as Lonna and Meg. I'll be posting some photos shortly on the GrooveLily Pad @ Yahoo!Groups. I'll also be making some of the "bootleg" recordings available to interested fans in the near future. ---Rob p.s. If there are any fans out there with live GrooveLily recordings that they have made, please let me know. David Kowalski and I are looking at ways to establish a song exchange network. |

Hi Folks, Some photos from the 5-10-03 Bodles Opera House show are now in the Photos section in the "NY Shows" folder/album on the Yahoo!Groups GrooveLily Pad. http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/groovelily/lst You must be a member of this Yahoo!Group to access the photo area. To join visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/groovelily/ Brendan was located in a poorly lit side of the stage, so his shots are not the greatest. --Rob |

Folks, Also see the great John Atashian photos that were recently posted on this site. Gee John, I didn't even know you were at the show. I guess I was so "focused" on what I was doing I missed you. Great, great photos, especially with the low lighting levels. I'm guessing you used a flash on some of these. Were they shot with film, or shot digitally? I love the shot of Gene and his mom! Look under the Spring 2003 section of the (photo) Gallery on the this website. ---Rob |
