Less than 2 weeks til the Lily hits PA again. And for the first time since the revolution hit my household, my sons will get to experience Live Lily! And I'm giving them a double dose, with tickets for both shows. Who's going? Seems like I haven't seen the band or any of you in forever!

Chase, my 11 year old, would like to hear Phantom Lover. It is by far his favorite song-- and he thinks the viper just screams! He also wanted to hear Wrecking Ball, but I've already begun to cushion his fall off that cloud.

Reece, my 13 year old, will be just days away from his 14th birthday! Reece hasn't selected a request yet, but I would suggest either Jumpy Bean or Stupid Mouth Shut! ;-) He's slowly going through the GL discography to be sure he requests the most difficult and least played song in the repertoire. I'll be sure to post his request as soon as I know.

Can I still make a request, too? Or have I used my allotment? Well, just in case, Nancy and I simply request to see some variation between the setlist for the early and late shows. Simple, huh?

Hope to see you at the show!
peace and sunshine,
--jon

Wow--I see lots of new stuff that I haven't heard before. And something else that's new? Covers of Jonatha Brooke and Patty Griffin songs? A week ago I didn't know who those two ladies were, but I have spent a decent part of my Spring Break educating myself about "indie" music. GrooveLily continues to surprise and delight me.

I'll post more later but a couple of quick things for Marcia:

GL's cover of Love is the Perfect Crime actually goes back a few years but it's pretty rare for it to show up on the setlist. If you like it, it was on the Folk Appetizer EP from 2001. I think all copies of this have been sold or given away but you can download the songs from it on the "Odds & Ends" page on this site (Click "Music" from the main page and then click the "Odds & Ends" link at the top of the Music page).

The band has been covering Every Little Bit for about a year now and it's been great fun to watch it grow from the first performance (where they introduced it as being little more than an open rehearsal) to a full-fledged Groovelily tune. This song was a pretty regular part of the rotation last fall but I haven't heard it for a while (but then, GL hasn't been in this area for a while!

I also forgot to ask the title of Gene's song but I would guess the name is Accrued Liability (with an obvious double-entendre of "A Crude Liability"...if that IS the title, I'm not sure which will be the official spelling!)

Overall, two GREAT, GREAT shows...The Point just seems to be one of those venues that brings out a really special side of the band...not just great playing but a kind of intimacy and risk-taking that adds an extra special something to the evening.

More later...

The Point At The Point or How GrooveLily Nailed The Perfect 7-10 Split: A Tale of Two Lilys

With the prospect of two Groovelily shows in one night dangling like low hanging fruit in front of the masses, last night was a night filled with anticipation and buzz, a musical feast for audiences to sate themselves. Trust me, no one left hungry.

The two shows a night format is becoming increasingly more rare a happening for GL as our intrepid trio mature as pop rockers and as theater show upstarts. The dichotomy between the two was in evidence last night as the fought to stay true to both forms. The winner: Us, the fans, the people who love this band for their courage, their strength, and the range of their formidable talent.

As Jon has ably posted both set lists, with running times and song counts (way to go, Jon), and with certain PP's who saw GL the night before last in Baltimore and on Saturday having heard it already, let me add that Gene's new song, played in both sets, "Accrued Liability"(??), is a welcome, piquant addition to the GL song canon, and showcases not only Geno's song writing craft, but his newly shaved head as well. (There's nothing left to say about his playing, as all adjectives, adverbs, and exclamation points have been, by now, exhausted. But, I gamely press on). "Accrued" is in the best tradition of give the drummer some and, hey, look at me, no over here, the cat with the sticks and the skins kickin' it as hard everyone else. The song's about first person Gene, aren't they all(?), having relationship problems, again, and seeking a way to explain himself to anyone who'll listen. What ensues is a sizzling, syncopating jazz riff that choogles along on the tight rails of love gone wrong as only Gene can relate it. A tasty, tart moment in time, split into a million subtitles, with smart suppot from Val and Brendan, boppin' in and out of the mix. Smiles everywhere.

And speaking of new songs, the late show crowd was treated to many sonic comestibles that weren't on the plates of the early show comers, who clearly were peripatetic beyond reason and got slammed early and often by the GrooveLily tsunami. Again, smiles everywhere. Two late show tunes that were quietly slipped in: "Patiently" (from the antedeluvian "Inhabit My Heart" and not played in many, many years, and never by this emsemble) (?) and "Fragile Thing." Brendan mentioned that "Fragile Thing" had been at the bottom of GL's song trunk since 1999. And while the version last night, with lyrics read by Brendan, was not road worthy just yet, it was a sheer pleasure to hear, revealing the heart of a man at once ensnared and trembling before the love he professes. The confessional Brendan on display, balanced by an ambivalence that gives voice to a universe of mortal thoughts on that oldest of subjects. "Patiently" was rendered as a heart baring, soul tearing tale of love's ability to make us all look inward and discover what's chasing us.

It was made clear again last night that the true essence of GL can be found only in their live shows. Their talent, their hearts, the very essence of what they "are" is displayed, real-time, pushing the needles of delight into individual red zones of why we showed up in the first place: to see it live. And live you get, live you understand, live you live with them, tasting, hearing, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, entering into that zone that few artists reach, or worse, care about sharing with you. It's not just the songs, it's what happens inside those songs, the magical confluent chemistry of insight, energy, and love, propelling us down the corridors of their and our experience that becomes, in the crucible of the now, a divinely revealing and affirming moment of soaring anticipation realized and gained. You tell me how many bands you know that can deliver on that promise, the promise of not only entertainment, but awareness and the chance to walk out knowing more than when you walked in. Smiles all around indeed.

It has been mentioned before in these pages that GL may be veering more towards the "theater" side of their craft, tiring of the nearly 10 collective years of road trips and back, preferring the stability of some kind of home life and supportive patronage that will allow them to grow as artists in new and exciting directions. So, then, let's, as we go forward from here, understand that GrooveLily is the best kept secret in the world, and that no matter how things go, will always be the most intensely intelligent, exciting, positive musical experience of our lives. That way, formats, career tweaks, and artistic choices notwithstanding, we will always remember why we did this in the first place: to pleasure ourselves. That once and future memory lived again last night at The Point. No one, from either of these two very different shows, left disappointed, except for wanting more, more, and more. We were, all of us, allowed to leave our troubles at the door, honored and enriched by their performance, and seize the chance to live in the now. Not bad for $12, eh?

As shows like this dwindle to a precious few, as energy is infinite, as everything changes, as anything is possible, be sure not to miss any of these chances they are giving us to see PopLily, blooming ever new at a venue near you. We will not have this chance again, and we will not see their like again. This gift is not returnable, unique as it is, where would you return it to? No, these are indeed the good old days, and we are living them now. Every live show is a one-off, created just for you, sent with love, by a group of people who abhor the usual and the customary. They fight with each other each performance for ascendancy and the right to impress, but never let their egos stand in the way of the moment they share with us. Every song that you thought you knew, heard so many times you can't count, explodes alive and reborn under their creative hand. You simply have to be there each time to see not only songs reworked but rejuvenated and released from the bounds of what you thought you understood. Their knowing smiles onstage tell the story. Show band, rock band, pop afficionados, it doesn't matter the tag, the label, the review, this band will never do it the same way twice; and it's all for you, their audience, their friends, their reason for being. The best, I sense, is yet to come.

Various PP luminaries, as is their wont, showed up to celebrate the Lily in Bryn Mawr. Rise and Stan (with an assist from David the K) ably handled all the merch table duties, while David's soul mate Lonna, was giving a therapeutic massage clinic "au table." (don't ask!). Dancin' Pete and his S.O. helped GL with the load in/out and were nestled close to the band stand all night. The dangerousy lovely Karin Dunlevy was there, her beauty and charm igniting many personal head lamps, as was a large contingent from the Temenos Retreat Center (a fav GL hang), GL supporters all. Splendid Ed Mettee, the PP of choice from the Philly area, rented a front-row table for each show, and quietly rocked himself to death all night long. The sweetness that is Sharon Rodden and her beau, Gary, stayed for both shows after a long commute from Central NJ. Jon Daniels, the fair Nancy, the two Daniels boys anchored a back table, taking all of it in with great delight and shouts. For the 10pm show the most pleasant of PP surprise guests, beautiful Meg Numata and her man, Jim Greenlees jetted up from Maryland by way of NJ and added a note that was missing from the earlier show: them. As always if I have missed mentioning other PP's in attendance, my apologies.

Matt Callahan, GL's soundman, did a superb job of keeping it real, and Jon has already mentioned the hot noise that was generated by "All About Buford," GL's opening act. Fun, engaging, and seriously talented (what, no instruments? didn't need 'em; not one bit). The Point is always a gas to see GL in. Close in without being confining, great food and beverages, and a nice BYOB policy.

No matter where they show up, GrooveLily leaves it all on the floor every show. Sharing their lives in song; each performance reshapes their mission and our lives. This kind of live music magic does not happen without hard work and great chops. Every chance you have, go see them, experience them, enjoy them, and support them. No band deserves it more.

See you at the shows.

Gee Charles--don't you think you ought to print out this review, put it in an envelope with a stamp on it and mail it to Paste Magazine? What excellent descriptions--you made me feel like I was there and sorry that I couldn't be.

Hi Folks

Thanks to Bill Hebert and Risa Shiber for their great Petal Pusher pre-show promotional activities.:-) Thanks to Risa, Stan, and David for helping at the merchandise table.

A small comment regarding Love is the Perfect Crime. The last time I heard this song was in August of last year when GrooveLily first performed with All About Buford (in a tiny coffee shop in East Bridgewater, MA). All About Buford did a cover of a Jonatha Brooke tune, and GrooveLily quickly added Love is the Perfect Crime to that night's set list in response. Probably not a coincidence that it reappeared on Saturday night.

Rob,

I just love that kind of trivia. And it makes for good liner notes for bootlegs. =)

So I'm now thinking about what songs to post from the late show. I thought I'd post the late show version of Accrued Liability, Patiently, and Fragile Thing (you think Brendan would mind?)

Any other requests? (See setlist in previous post.) Since I'll only post 3 songs, make sure you justify your request.

I've got a soft spot for Every Little Bit, ever since the band debuted it in the roahouse in Pattenburg NJ (and since I happen to like Patty Griffin). It's also unlikely to appear elsewhere, since it's a cover song. However, I can't argue with Jon's selections, either.
