Another visit by our heroes at this northern VA coffehouse/recording spot. Good sound, good beverages, and ambience. Plus the hottest trio in existence. What more do you need?

The Capitol is in Revolution,

Good question, Jim. But I still need a breakout of Wrecking Ball...

Wow. You guys are in for a real treat tonight. The band was hotter than hell last night. AND they were very obviously having as much fun on stage as I've ever seen them have...

and if you get a chance, ask Brendan about his S12 improv at last night's Godfrey Daniels show. Wow.

Wow. We had a real treat tonight. The band was hotter than hell tonight. AND they were very obviously having as much fun on stage as I've ever seen them have...

Had to do that. . .very useful words, and they fit tonight's experience so very well. Paul and Storm from da Vinci's Notebook (now on hiatus) opened, and served very nicely to warm the crowd up with great warmth and a certain lowbrow humor.

The arrangements were a good deal hotter than I remembered (which suits me just fine), and 'Accrued Liability' that I've been reading about here was great. JimG will undoubtedly be along with detail and set list; all I want to add to this initial post was that we called them back out for two encores, which also included the openers Paul and Storm on stage, and a few folks were looking around hopefully for a third.

... left the setlist at home; I'll post that this evening. In the meantime, some general impressions/memories:

- Meg and I walked in about 7:15, and saw that Jammin Java had dispensed with the tables in front, setting up row seating only. A very good sign. By show time, every seat was filled, staff had added rows of stack chairs in the back of the music area, and people were standing four deep. All in all, there were about 180 veteran and newbie GrooveLily fans. (Don't tell the fire marshall; I don't know JJ's rated capacity .
-GrooveLily absolutely torched the place (musically), with riveting versions of Little Nemesis and Apocalyptic Love Song. Val didn't wander through the audience on her solos, but it didn't matter. The crowd was enthralled.
-Paul and Storm coming onstage for the encore: quite possibly the best (how many are there?) cover of Land of Under ('80s flashback moment), complete with pennywhistle solo.
- A rare and entirely welcome rendition of Try Again, albeit without the swirling, Moog-ish instrumentals.
- The crowd absolutely demanded a second encore, clapping, yelling, whistling, and stomping until Val, Brendan, and Gene re-took the stage to perform Happy, Happy, Happy, again with Paul and Storm front and center nailing the chorus and making Brendan completely lose it with their antics during the verses.
-Brian and Diane Soronson and Kay Coyte and her son ably manned the merch table, handling the intermission and post-show rush without a qualm. The take reflected that.
- Victoria's GL dogtags were the hit of the merch, with demand almost completely stripping the inventory. (Someone has to help Victoria with her cottage industry; otherwise, she may spontaneously combust from the effort and love she puts into each and every item.)
-Uncounted numbers of people coming up to the merch table saying "I'm a big DaVinci's Notebook fan and came to see Paul and Storm, but you guys blew me away."

The Revolution is spread by co-opting the co-bill. They may come for whatever reason, to see whomever; they will walk away converted.

As hard as I tried, it just was not in the cards for me to make it to the gig on Saturday. Boo Hoo. I was there in spirit...hope all of my fellow PPs and V/B/G could "feel the love". Please tell me this wasn't really the last area gig until January.

Could not agree more with Jim's and Barry's posting. The energy in the place was incredible. The group was really into it and the addition of Paul and Storm's crazy antics during the encores further increased those levels. As I attend more shows, I continue to be impressed with the fact that no two performances are the same. Play lists are varied, Val, Brenden and Gene add new twists to many of the songs and the Gl's interaction with the opening groups change with each show. Standing ovations seem to be the norm these days. Crowd size also seems to be increasing. I hope that the group will consider larger venues-150-350 seats.

Jane- you can plan to attend the "clothing optional" concert in Paw Paw West Virginia in August.

This performance raises several questions

(1) Are cameras allowed, as this might make a particularly interesting line of "adult only" Petal Pusher Private page video clips

(2) Does "clothing optional" apply to both the performers and the audience, and if yes, has the band taken a position on how they will opted? Will it be a function of the weather? Will it be "all or nothing" (I mean all the members of the band chose to opted in or out regarding there stage attire).

Good questions. I think that merch table sales could increase significantly if suntan lotion is sold along with the traditional cds and shirts.

and now, finally, the set list:

First set
It's All Right
Weight of the World
Looking Forward Looking Back
Live Thru This
Accrued Liability - Gene nails it again
No Room In Your Bag
Little Nemesis

Second Set
Rewind
Patiently - with new violin part
Try Again - digging through the back catalog for another gem
Diva Girl
Striking 12 mini-set
Apocalyptic Love Song

Encore #1
Land of Under - by Men At Work, for those of you who've blanked out the early '80s

Encore #2
Happy, Happy, Happy

And I have it on good authority that our intrepid trio will exercise their option and perform clothed at the Avalon Music Festival in August. However, stocking the merch table with a supply of oversize shirts along with the suntan oil may not be a bad idea.

It's really not "Land down Under"? This is actually one of my favourite 80s songs, and I'm really upset to have missed the cover :-(. Rob, any chance you recorded it?

You're right, Ewan. Regardless, it was wild.
