Hiya DC'ers! You guys getting ready for the upcoming shows? I'm headed out on vacation for a week in a few days, but I arranged the beach part to end in time for a loooong drive from SC to DC on the way back to central VA. Hope to see lots of folks there! I'll be bringing a newbie who listens to the Nutshell I gave here almost as often as I did when that was a new album... |

Hey, Lori, we'll be there for both shows. (Maybe late, depending on commuter traffic Friday and Meg's work schedule Saturday) The Friday show's a freebie, and the Panzers do a nice job putting on house concerts. I saw the trio there in '02 (with Gene on djembe), and the sound was great. Tickets are limited, however, so order now! The Revolution invades all parts of the DC area, JimG |

The Saturday duo house concert in Columbia is sold out . This means the Friday (free!!) gig in Fairfax is your only chance to see the band (unless you make the trek to Berlin MD, which is certainly acceptable). See you there, Jim |

Naomi, You might try contacting the Panzers to see if they can squeeze you in. See the Gigs page for their email and phone number. Newness matters not; the Revolution is all JimG |

Here is a brief summary of the Fairfax show on Friday June 24. Friday's concert was outdoors in a suburban park in Fairfax Va. The stage was in front of a small lake and the audience sat on a rolling hill. About 200 people attended including Petal Pushers Jim and Meg equiped with pictures of their new house in the DC 'Burbs, Pete and Bev fresh from the Thursday night show in Berlin Md., the Newton's, Laurie from Va, and Diane and I along with a harem of little kids dancing in front of the stage. The weather was perfect and the Bose sound system was tested for the first time outdoors and performed admirably carrying the sound flawslessly to the entire audience. This is the first time we saw are favorite trio since March and we were not dissapointed. As you can see in the photos, Spike is making his physical presence known. The concert included selections from Striking 12, Wheelhouse as well as many of our other favorite numbers. Many of the little kids were mesmerized with Val's performance, staring at her and dancing around to her beat. She even came off the stage to play the Viper for them. One little boy almost followed her back on the stage. The band did great and received a standing ovation. However, some of the audience came more for the free outdoor concert and not to see any particular band. Therefore, the crowd was not as into the concert as we are used to seeing in a more traditional venue. Still it was a very successful concert which resulted in new Groovelily fans. I do not have the set list (I have one for the Saturday night show). Hopefully someone else can provide this. Will add a review of Saturday's wonderful house concert tomorrow. Diane and Bryan provide an excellent summary of the Fairfax gig. I'd just add that other Petal Pushers present included David Konigsberg (with family and friends, one of whom won the giveaway), Nancy Rappaport, and Lori Sutter (finishing off her vacation with a DC-area swing). Hopefully we'll post the set lists for both shows in the next day or two. JimG (Message edited by JimGreenlees on June 30, 2005) |

Lori, Lori, Lori. Here I thought that you had moved away to seek peace and tranqulity (not to mention a new job) and now I know that you were really just trying to get closer to GrooveLily. Smart move, cause I don't see this band playing piddly ole SC anymore. I sure hope that Muhammed can go to the mountain in December! |

On to Saturday night when the Duo (sans Gene) performed at the Panzer House concert in Columbia Maryland, one of the premier house concerts in the Baltimore/Washington area. Most house concert venues (including ours) use the basement. The Panzer's convert their great room with cathedral ceilings into a mini concert hall holding about 60 people. The room has excellent acoustics which were improved by the paired down Bose system which was fantastic in this small area. This was the night for husband and wife acts. Vickie Russell and her husband opened the show with some suprising tunes including one about her father(who was in attendance), who survived the Holocaust and moved to America to start a new life. The duo (actually 2 2/3 including Spike) started out strong. Spike looked great under Val's Due in October shirt. The place sold out with Petal Pushers Jim (Meg had to work all day), Pete and Bev, Lori (this time I got the spelling correct)Sutter the Newton's, Diane and I along with some Baltimorons(correct spelling) that have been increasing the numbers of Groovelily concerts under their belts including the Blocks, Newmans and a few other devotees. The pot luck munchies and beverages were also excellent. The play list follows: -Weight of the World; -Looking Forward,Looking Back -Live through this -Open Roads -No Room in Your Bag -Snow -Can't Go Home -It's Not All Right -While You Were Out -Patiently -Control -Bit By Bit (Patty Griffin) -Thaw -Odomotor Song -Little Nemesis (encore to rousing standing ovation) Val and Brendan really got into the music this night. They played off of each other. The crowd responded to the emotion, passion and energy that moved back and forth between Val, Brendan and the audience. I was particularly impressed with Patty Griffith's "Bit By Bit". Val got very involved in this song. I was exhausted just watching her perform this number. I have seen many Groovelily concerts, but I think that this was one of the best. The evening ended with the group and the audience as one. It was truly a special evening. Bryan Soronson |

Just one clarification on Bryan's set list. The Patty Griffin cover is Every Little Bit. Vickie Russell is based in New Paltz NY, and well worth seeing. The ability to take someone else's life story and make a compelling song from it is an enviable one. JimG |

Flo, Flo, Flo! Of COURSE I moved to get closer to the band. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE for creating all that peace & tranquility & whatnot in my life ...and I got a job to live here (rather than moving for the job) - otherwise I'd have just stayed in ol' SC listening to the tunes in the car with you & Rick!!!! I'm missing out on the next round of gigs in the DC area though Summer obligations around this place are pretty plentiful. Maybe the fall or winter though! We should plan a mutual concert - kinda attack them from both the north & south ;) Good to hear from you, lori |
