Val, Brendan and Gene convene tomorrow for an intensive week-long WHEELHOUSE writing retreat, at Rhinebeck Writers’ Retreat in Rhinebeck, NY. We are honored to be part of this retreat’s inaugural summer: founded by former NAMT Executive Director Kathy Evans, this program is designed to nurture the creative process, by providing time and space (and food!) to writers like ourselves. No kids, no distractions, just a focused block of time in a beautiful secluded locale to complete our long-awaited autobiographical show, in preparation for its world premiere production next spring at TheatreWorks of Silicon Valley. We are really looking forward to this.

It is looking likely that we’ll be spending the final week of 2011 in NYC, performing STRIKING 12 in a lovely intimate Manhattan venue which we’ll announce shortly. (This is in addition to our November 18 Lone Tree, CO and December 10 Westport, CT performances.)
Keep informed by visiting our brand new STRIKING 12 Facebook page. May we suggest that you take a moment to “like” STRIKING 12 on Facebook, and GrooveLily as well? (We are fragile and need constant reassurance.)

Producer Matthew Kwatinetz has officially come on board and has optioned Val’s solo musical, ERNEST SHACKLETON LOVES ME. We could not be more thrilled…and plans are now underway to get the show up and running, starting with a probable Seattle workshop this fall.

In case you happen to be near Weston, VT later this month: our dear friend (and former GrooveLily backup singer) Jenny Giering‘s new musical SAINT-EX is opening at the Weston Playhouse (August 25-September 10). We wish we could be there ourselves, but unfortunately schedules don’t permit…go if you can, and tell us all about it.

Madison Kemp, a 14-year-old fan from Hawaii who has been sending us her GrooveLily artwork for a couple of years now, has outdone herself with this latest SLEEPING BEAUTY WAKES-inspired piece. We love it!

We had an absolutely tremendous opening night last Friday, and the show is in its best shape ever with this new La Jolla Playhouse production. Critics and audiences are responding, and due to popular demand the show has been EXTENDED through August 28.
La Jolla has even been running a contest called “Beauty in Bed” where people send in photos of their slumbering selves (and their beautiful pets). It’s pretty great.
Please tell everyone you know, and help make SBW an even bigger hit in San Diego! La Jolla is running some terrific deals, like “30 And Under” special $20 tickets – and starting next week we’ll be offering something very cool to all ticket buyers: a free download of the newest/most talked-about song from the show, “Good For Me.” Stay tuned here for more details.
“Drop-dead dreamy”
“Playhouse’s savvy retelling of fairy tale brims with winning songs, performances.”
- James Hebert, The San Diego Union-Tribune

We’re in the darkened theatre–the big proscenium stage of the Weiss Theatre at La Jolla Playhouse. We stay in this dark room for 10-12 hours a day now, with brief 10-minute breaks every hour or so when they turn on the house lights on and we go outside to get a moment of beautiful Southern California sunshine. We’re in pretty august company, and it’s nice to read that Gaby Alter and Itamar Moses’ terrific piece “Nobody Loves You” is getting more work time at the Rhinebeck retreat AND is getting a production at the Old Globe. Val and I will be there with bells on–this show kicks butt.
