“Sagebrush Valentine” Show, Zipper Theatre NYC Sep 10

Brendan and Val will be among the songwriters pioneering a new concert series, “Sagebrush Valentine,” next Wednesday, September 10, at the Zipper Theatre in NYC.

From the Sagebrush Valentine Myspace page: “What began as a game played religiously in living rooms by Nathan, Chris, and Maddy has become a gift they want to give to you. The Valentine plays like this: Six brave songwriters get together and pick a song title out of a hatful of audience-generated suggestions. They take a breath and/or a shot, and go off for one hour (!) to write that song. A few days later, the results are presented live-on-stage, along with a peek into the canon of each talented artist. Come to the Zipper to hear six new songs by six great songwriters, all variations on a theme chosen by you! Go to www.thezipperfactory.com for tickets and to submit your amazing song title idea…”

Each songwriter or writing team will present their brand-new song, plus 2 additional songs of their choice. Hope you can join us! Showtime is 9:30 PM on Wednesday, September 10, and the other fearless participants are: Maddy Wyatt, Chris Miller, Nathan Tysen, Adam Shenk and Daniel Zaitchik. (Maddy has kindly given us the first time slot, so that as parents of a very early-rising toddler we’ll be able to head home if we turn into pumpkins…but we’ll stay as long as we can to hear the other songwriters.)

Long Story Short demos #3 & #4 - “Live Like This” & “We Should Get Married”

As we release our 15 home demos each week, leading up to Pittsburgh opening night on October 29, there will be several 2-song Wednesdays; today is the first.

Something helpful to know about this show, and about the play it’s based on (”An Infinite Ache” by David Schulner): there are sudden, frequent jumps forward in time throughout the story. This week, we jump from CHARLES and HOPE’s very first date to weeks and months later in their relationship. And then we keep jumping, and jumping again. It’s a jumping festival.

See you next Wednesday, September 10, for demos #5 & #6: “Fragile As Love” & “Unpacking The Suitcase.”

Verses and Choruses and Such

This blog entry may bore some of you to tears. If you don’t have any interest in a discussion of song form, I suggest you visit some other part of the site, or go out and play in the sunshine.

For the rest of you — this came out of the comments that were posted last week about our song “Rocking Chairs” from “Long Story Short.” There isn’t much of a chorus in that song — just a little line which you get to hear three times: “sitting in our rocking chairs, watching grandkids playing on the lawn.” Read More »

Long Story Short demo #2 - “It Happens In A Moment”

Okay, here’s demo #2. Thanks so much for all your great feedback on #1.

To quell any vestigial confusion, let me reiterate that we are *strictly* the writers on LONG STORY SHORT: the characters are an Asian woman and a Jewish man, to be played by the wonderful actors Pearl Sun and Ben Evans. We will be IN THE AUDIENCE through opening night (in both Pittsburgh and Palo Alto), and then we’ll be back doing GrooveLily concerts and Striking 12 shows.

Also, we want you to know that there are fake drums and fake strings on the demo — and we’re doing that for the purpose of working out some orchestration ideas, not because we think they sound realistic. They don’t. They can sound a little poopy sometimes. Okay, no more caveats.

Check back next Wednesday, September 3, for demos #3 & #4: “Live Like This” & “We Should Get Married.”

Long Story Short demo #1 - “Rocking Chairs”

So here’s something we’ve never done before - we’re releasing home demo tapes as we make them.

We begin with a collection of home demos from LONG STORY SHORT - Brendan and Val’s brand new 2-person musical premiering in Pittsburgh and Palo Alto this fall. The recordings will appear here song by song *every Wednesday* beginning August 20, building up to first opening night Wednesday, October 29.

There will be 15 demos altogether, and the full album will be available for download as a collection. (If you purchase them song by song as they’re released, you’ll end up paying the same price, but will get to hear the songs earlier.)

Check back next Wednesday, August 27, for the the next demo, “It Happens In A Moment.”

We were delighted to see this on the front page of Playbill.com this morning:

GrooveLily Revamps Its Website and Offers Preview of New Musical Long Story Short

By Kenneth Jones
18 Aug 2008

The rock band/musical theatre trio GrooveLily — creators of the cult hit musical Striking 12 — relaunched its website Aug. 17, offering fans access to past and future pop albums — and a special preview of the new musical Long Story Short.

The site (groovelily.com) was first launched by Brendan Milburn, Gene Lewin and Valerie Vigoda in 1996. “A revamp is long overdue, and our fans have been pestering us for ages — to the point of offering their help, expertise and advice,” Vigoda told Playbill.com. “It’s time.”

Welcome to our new site!

We’re so happy you’ve come to visit our revamped website, officially launching August 18, 2008. Some exciting features:

  1. If you’re just getting started with GrooveLily, the New? Start Here… section can be really useful; there’s a FAQ link as well as Listening Suggestions to help you get your bearings.
  2. The Songs section is what we’ve spent the most time on, and where the biggest changes are. For the first time, you can buy our songs direct from us, DRM-free, and listen to them on any device that’ll play an mp3; in addition, you can now stream every song we’ve ever released, in its entirety, for free.
  3. The new site also, finally, frees us up to release new recordings immediately as they become available. (The first example, beginning next week: we’ll be releasing home demos from Brendan and Val’s new musical LONG STORY SHORT, which opens this fall at City Theatre of Pittsburgh and TheatreWorks Palo Alto. We’ll release new songs every Wednesday from August 20 until opening night in Pittsburgh on October 29.
  4. For the first time, you can custom-order your own GL swag (T-shirts, journals, mugs, etc.) from our new CafePress store, GrooveLily’s Swag Shack. Our personal favorite new item (which was a fan idea from years ago but never got made), inspired by the title of one of our most popular songs: the “No Room In Your Bag” tote bag.
  5. Several out-of-print items and hard-to-find rarities are now available on the Songs page; most are collected in the “Odds & Ends” section near the bottom. We’ll keep adding to this section as we unearth more stuff.
  6. Though we’re touring less these days, we still love playing gigs. Encourage us to come to you! We’ve just joined Eventful, a site where you can “demand” that your favorite performers play in your town; when we reach critical mass in your area, we’ll plan a show. Demand us by clicking on the “WANTED” poster, on the right side of our site.
  7. The new GrooveLily.com (based on WordPress) is designed to be much more about interaction with YOU; it’s simultaneously much more technologically advanced and simpler. We’ll be adding new songs and demos frequently, blogging and posting and having as much of a dialog with you as you’d like.
  8. To that end, we’d love to hear from you. You’ll notice that you can comment on any post on the site, including this one.
