A Little Midsummer Night's Music

This is the music we wrote for an innovative production of Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM in 2006, directed by Tina Landau and co-produced by McCarter Theatre and Paper Mill Playhouse. There are three songs with original lyrics, plus eight more tracks with Shakespeare's text set to music.

"Midsummer" is some of the most adventurous, fun, almost prog-rock writing we've ever done. Setting Shakespeare's words definitely freed us from any thought of trying to be "pop" or "radio-friendly"; we stretched out and had a blast with this record.

Striking 12

This is a live recording from 2004, of our holiday concert-musical STRIKING 12. This CD is essentially a radio play, including all the narration and storytelling in between the songs. The show weaves three stories and settings: contemporary New York City, 19th century Denmark, and the very room in which the show is presented.

On New Year's Eve, an over-worked and under-inspired single guy who's had enough of holiday cheer makes a resolution: to stay home and go to bed early. On another New Year's Eve, a continent away—and more than a century earlier—Hans Christian Andersen's Little Match Girl tries unsuccessfully to sell her matches in the snow.

The two stories are brought together when a young woman selling special "full-spectrum holiday light bulbs" to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder shows up at the grumpy man's door. Though the man (who probably could use the bulbs) seems to enjoy the young woman's company, he sends her away. It's not until he reads "The Little Match Girl" that he is finally pulled out of his funk.

This CD is our first release on the terrific theatrical label PS Classics. It just goes to show you...we stopped trying to get signed, and almost immediately got snapped up by a record company.

Are We There Yet?

This is our 2003 studio CD, produced by Chris Tarrow and Brendan Milburn, and mixed by Ben Wisch. We think it sounds more like "us" than any of our albums that came before it...all 3 of us sing lead, and we are happy with our unique sound. Since we recorded "Are We There Yet?" our definition of where "there" is has changed a bit...and we think we're getting closer.

Just The Three Of Us (Live)

This is our live CD from 2002, when we were trying hard to fit ourselves into the folk market: hence, Gene plays the djembe.

Little Light (Back Issue Series)

This is our studio CD from 2000, produced by Alain Mallet and mixed by Michael Brauer. This album was our biggest attempt at pop hit-worthiness to date: we focused hard on the female-fronted, AAA aspect of our band, trying to get signed by a major label...and ended up with a beautiful, lush record that doesn't fully capture our unique sound. We are very proud of this record nevertheless!

Brendan & The Extenuating Circumstances (Back Issue Series)

This is Brendan's solo album, made mostly while Val was away on tour with Cyndi Lauper and Joe Jackson. However, it contains the very first tracks which feature all 3 current members of GrooveLily (Val, Brendan and Gene) playing together.

GrooveLily Odds & Ends

Hooked On Numbers

These are 3 songs we wrote for the Hooked On Phonics company (Educate, Inc.) in 2006. Though they are ostensibly for kids, we have found them to be great additions to our regular live concerts (except for the epic "Express Train Song," which we have never attempted on stage).

Starting Over: From "Remembering Rachel"

Rachel Bissex, excellent folk singer/songwriter and extraordinarily lovely person, left us on February 20, 2005, a victim of breast cancer. Her friends from all over the US were devastated. Shortly before she died, she said the one thing she was concerned about was getting her children, Emma and Matt, through college. This song, "Starting Over," is part of the 2-disc set of Rachel's songs called "Remembering Rachel"; all proceeds go directly to Emma and Matt's college fund at rachelbissex.org.

The Nutshell EP

This was a promotional 5-song EP we released in late 2002, soon after our "Just The Three Of Us (live)" album. The idea behind this EP was to show what GrooveLily was "in a nutshell." We included 3 of the most popular songs from "Just The Three Of Us (live)," one of our favorite studio tracks from "Little Light," and one new unavailable-anywhere-else-song with full band: "Breathe In, Breathe Out."*

*Please note: when purchasing "Everything GrooveLily Has Ever Released," you'll see "Breathe In, Breathe Out" as one of the downloads, but nothing marked specifically "The Nutshell EP"; that's because the other 4 tracks are included in the other albums, so we didn't duplicate them here. The 5 tracks in order are: "No Room In Your Bag (live)," "Phantom Lover (live)," "Looking Forward, Looking Back (live)," "Breathe In, Breathe Out" and "Weight Of The World."

Folk Appetizer

This was a promo EP we released in early 2001, just in time for the International Folk Alliance conference in Vancouver; as with "Just The Three Of Us (live)," this 4-song CD was an attempt to get more bookings in the folk market, which was our most promising touring circuit at the time. It worked! By summer, we were living in a van.

Long Story Short (Demos)

While Gene is out playing "the jazz," Brendan and Valerie can often be found writing musicals. This section is a place to check out the growing Milburn-Vigoda catalog.

We begin with a collection of home demos from LONG STORY SHORT - our brand new 2-person musical premiering in Pittsburgh and Palo Alto this fall (2008). We released these demos song by song *every Wednesday* beginning August 20, building up to first opening night Wednesday, October 29.

There are 15 demos altogether, and the full album is available for download as a collection for $10.

Flip!

While Valerie and Brendan are writing musicals, Gene can often be found playing "the jazz." This section is a place to check out a bit of Gene's non-GrooveLily work, with his longtime collaborator (and occasional GrooveLily soloist) Andy Parsons. We begin with FLIP! from 2003, courtesy of Sons of Sound Records.

From the Sons of Sound site:
Combining melodic writing with deep groove and thoughtful improvisation, FLIP! is small group jazz at its most engaging. Co-leaders Andy Parsons and Gene Lewin are joined by collaborators John Patitucci (Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea) and textural guitar master Ben Monder (Maria Schneider, Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band, Marc Johnson), both recognized as being among the finest instrumentalists of their generation.

Andy Parsons: compositions, tenor & soprano saxophones
Gene Lewin: drums
John Patitucci: acoustic bass
Ben Monder: electric guitar

Produced by Jeff Penney with Andy Parsons and Gene Lewin
