Only a King

KING
So I’m here to ask a favor for the queen
And I hope you’ll grant me pardon
if I’m doing this all wrong
But I haven’t prayed since I was seventeen
‘Cause I haven’t lacked for anything
I’ve needed all along
But the queen is ever on the brink of tears
And the clock is ever ticking and the hour is
growing late
And the days and weeks give way to years
and years
And I used to think that good things come to those who wait
Well if money could buy it
I’d spend it all right here and now
God knows I’ve tried it
Made no difference anyhow
Well the queen wants a baby
And we’ve tried everything
But I’m not a magician
I am only a king
So the queen and I went searching far and wide
Till we came upon a wizard who could help us out
one day
His elixir worked so well that by and by
We sent word throughout the land my wife was in
the family way
So our subjects threw a baby shower that June
There were teddy bears and teething rings and a
royal blue layette
But we found that we had spoken up too soon
And we were left with presents piled up ’round an
empty bassinet
So I send up this prayer now
Tell me what can I do?
For my throne needs an heir now
And my people need him too
Well they have prayed for this baby
And the hope he would bring
I can’t answer their prayers
I am only a king who has gone to the ends of the
earth—every pilgrimage, potion and cure
A king with a treasury knee-deep in gold, and a life
that was never so poor
A king with no orders to give—I’m no longer the
master of all I survey
Well would someone command this commander and
show me the way
Tell me who do I pray to?
Tell me where do I go?
Is there anyone listening?
Doesn’t anybody know?
If I could hold my own baby
I would give anything
But I’m nobody’s father
I am only a king
